What if I am absent from work?
If you are absent from work because you are on statutory or paid family leave (maternity, paternity, adoption or parental leave), you will still be treated as a Member.
During this period you will be expected to continue to pay contributions while you are receiving pay from your Employer based on the pay you actually receive. If you do not receive any pay you will not be required to contribute.
During the first six months of any period of statutory family leave, your pension benefit will be calculated as if you had worked normally and received your normal pay, whether or not you pay contributions. If you are still absent on family leave at the end of this period and you receive any payment from your Employer, you will be expected to pay contributions based on the pay you actually receive but your pension will be calculated as if you had worked normally and received your normal pay for the relevant period.
During any period (other than statutory family leave) for which you do not receive any pay and are not paying contributions, you will not build up pension. However, you will still be covered for death in service benefits.
